THEATRE: The Visit
He betrays her. She exacts revenge. The Visit is a macabre love story, and designers Derek McLane, Brian MacDevitt, Susan Hilferty, Michael Bodeen and Rob Milburn have created a world for the Kander and Ebb musical that is at once expressionistic and relentlessly real. Davi Napoleon reports from Chicago, where Frank Galati's evocative production opened at the Goodman Theatre. Participating vendors include ETC, GAM, Strand, Wybron, Soundcraft, LCS, Denon, Meyer, EV, MacPherson, BSS, Rane, Lexicon, Crown, Crest, Shure, Telex, Sennheiser, Bag End, and Mackie.

ARCHITECTURE: The Winter Garden Theatre
Architect and theatre restoration specialist Francesa Russo has been working onthe interior restoration of the Shubert's famed Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. Home to Cats for 20 years, the theatre is being restored for the new Abba musical, Mamma Mia!. Architectural highlights include the central dome, the side boxes, and columns as the theatre is returned to its pre-Cats splendor. The painting and gold leaf is by Evergreene Studios with soft goods created by I Weiss, new seats by Irwin Seating, custom designed carpet by Bloomsberg, architectural lighting by Lite Makers and Metropolitan Lighting, custom wall covering by Wolf Gordon, and drapery fabric by DesignTex (who also provided seating fabric in espresso velour). Ellen Lampert-Gréaux reports.

TECHNOLOGY: Digitally Printed Scenery
Using large-scale digital printing to produce scenic elements--drops, hard panels, draperies, etc-is becoming more and more common in live events. Using recent work on the cruise ship Adventure of the Seas as the central examples, Stephen Nelson of River City Scenic Inc. explains the many practical considerations that come into play when choosing among fabrics, vinyls, printing processes, image resolutions, printer's color proofs, and more.

TECHNICAL THEATRE: A Metamorphosing Metamorphoses
Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre production of Metamorphoses, a meditation on the myths of Ovid written and directed by Mary Zimmerman, is a big hit on the regional circuit, making stops at the Berkeley Rep, Seattle Rep, Mark Taper Forum; it was such a hit in its New York debut at Second Stage that it will be moving to Broadway’s Circle in the Square. This wouldn’t seem like a big deal except that Dan Ostling’s set is essentially a big pool. Michael Eddy talks to Ostling and production stage manager Anjali Bidani, worked on the production since Chicago, about the challenges in reconfiguring the production for each location. Scenery for the New York production was constructed by Atlantic Studios.

CONCERTS: Britney Spears
The teen pop sensation is using this short tour, Simply Britney 2001, to promote her new album and the fact that she's no longer a little girl. Ahem. This show has everything: pyro, video, lasers, rain effects, flying Britney, you name it. Steve Cohen has formed his own production company called Steve Cohen Productions and he had the tour's lighting and set account, which was then subcontracted to Westsun and LSD/Fourth Phase for the lighting and Tait Towers for the set construction. Lighting is a co-design between Steve and Joel Young--set a co-design between Steve and Jim Day. Lighitng includes: Coemar, High End Systems, Syncrolite, Robert Juliat and Lycian spotlights and control boards are Flying Pig Systems Wholehog IIs. Flying and rigging systems are by Branum; video is by BCC Video, pyro and lasers by Pyrotek Special Effects, Inc., designed by Doug Adams; and sound is by Clair Brothers. Cathy McHugh, who's writing the story, calls it the everything but the kitchen sink tour.
