Color Kinetics Debuts ActiveBeam Technology For Electronic Beam Angle Control With No Moving Parts

Burlington, MA, USA – Color Kinetics, the original name in color-changing architectural lighting and a Signify (Euronext: LIGHT) architainment lighting brand, today announced ActiveBeam, technology that delivers on a long-held dream: active light beam adjustment, from narrow to wide, with no moving parts. It arrives as ActiveBeam versions of two of Color Kinetics’ most popular luminaire families: BlastElite ActiveBeam, an exterior flood luminaire, and GrazeElite ActiveBeam, an exterior linear grazing luminaire.

“Beam angle is usually settled long before the luminaires reach the site, and changing it later means adding hardware or swapping lenses,” explains Nilesh Naik, Global Product Manager, Color Kinetics at Signify. “Adjusting the beam no longer requires late nights with spread lenses and cutoffs. ActiveBeam allows designers to set the beam to fit the architecture during commissioning or take direct control of each beam zone dynamically as part of the design, creating light patterns that shift, undulate, and pulse. It's beam control at your fingertips.”

Inside each luminaire, three beam zones (center, middle, and outer), each with its own RGBAW LEDs, automatically adjust their intensity to deliver the beam angle chosen, anywhere from 12° to 60°. With no lens swaps or accessories, one luminaire can serve a long throw to a distant façade and a wide wash on a nearby wall. The beam can be set once at commissioning and left alone, or adjusted from the control system as the installation evolves over time.

“ActiveBeam gives designers a second dimension of control," adds Naik. "Change the beam angle, like color, motion, and intensity, and a façade gets a fresh presence that holds attention.”

IntelliHue Pro mixes five LED colors in each beam zone for millions of saturated colors and brilliant white light. Both luminaires support familiar three-channel color control, and Chromasync Pro keeps color consistent as the beam angle changes and across other luminaire families, while FluxBoost ensures that the light intensity is uniform at different beam angles.

“At Color Kinetics, we've been committed to innovation that gives lighting professionals dynamic control over the light from our founding,” said Martin Palmer, Product Management and Marketing Leader, Color Kinetics and Vari-Lite at Signify. “ActiveBeam is our latest proof. Beam angle has always been fixed, a decision made long before the luminaire reached the site. Now, it's another creative option in the designer’s toolbox—and a choice that stays open from commissioning through the life of the project.”
