Charles Stone First IALD President-Elect

Charles Stone, principal of Fisher Marantz Stone, the NYC-based architectural lighting firm, has become the first president-elect of the IALD (International Association of Lighting Designers). His election to this new position was confirmed at the IALD's 33rd annual meeting, held in Chicago on November 15 & 16, 2002. He will succeed current president André Tammes at the end of next year.

The new position of president-elect reflects the organization's concerns with continuity and what Tammes refers to as "succession planning." At the completion of his own two-year term, Tammes will become the first official past president of the IALD. Other meeting news included the annoucement of new board members and committee chairs, including Dawn Hollingsworth and Larry French: membership committee, director at large: David Bird; director of membership: Michael Souter; director of education: Robert Prouse; and director of external affairs: Jeffrey Miller. Gary Gordon was named a Fellow of the IALD.

The IALD also announced the appointment of Marsha Turner as the new executive vice president of the association. She will replace Morag Fulllove, who is leaving after five and a half years with the IALD (Morag is going off to Brussels!). Turner joins the IALD with extensive experience in association management in the health care industry. She begins her new position officially as of December 2002.

The IALD meeting included an educational conference with two days of informative workshops, some of which explore the "hot" topics that the industry is facing such as energy efficiency and sustainability. One session that presented light in a new angle was called "Illumination In Works of Art," a look at the work of visual artists who work with light as a medium, including James Turrell, Dan Flavin, Keith Sonnier, Robert Irwin, and other contemporary artists, some of which were included in the exhibit Rays of Light at Lightology, host of a great party with live music, food, and great networking opportunities.
