Broadway Lighting Master Classes and Broadway Sound Master Classes Scheduled for June in New York

PRIMEDIA’s Entertainment Design and Lighting Dimensions magazines--sister publications to SRO--announce the 9th annual Broadway Lighting Master Classes (BLMC) and the inaugural Broadway Sound Master Classes (BSMC), a two-part training program in professional lighting and sound design, that will take place at John Jay College Theatre (899 10th Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets) in New York City on June 25-29, 2003, with the prestigious EDDY Awards presentation on Friday evening, June 27, 2003.

Tony Award-winning lighting designer Jules Fisher continues to serve as creative consultant for the BLMC, and leads a distinguished faculty of lighting and projection designers including Peggy Eisenhauer, Paul Marantz, Wendall Harrington, Beverly Emmons, Donald Holder, Ken Billington, and Clifton Taylor. The three-day BLMC curriculum, Wednesday through Friday, June 25, 26 and 27, includes a performance of the musical Gypsy on Broadway (lit by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer) followed by a post-show discussion.

Creative consultant for the launch of the BSMC is acclaimed sound designer Abe Jacob, whose faculty of leading sound designers, including Tom Clark, Mark Menard, Nevin Steinberg, Chris Cronin, Chris Evans, and John Kilgore, will present two days of classes on Saturday and Sunday, June 28 and 29. Abe Jacob, considered by the industry as the “godfather” of sound design will present the keynote address to kick off the BSMC on Saturday morning.

Both the BLMC and BSMC focus on the creative and artistic side of the design disciplines. There will be two separate Manufacturer Showcases, one for professional lighting and one for pro audio. Corporate sponsors have tabletop displays with their latest products, offering attendees invaluable hands-on exposure to cutting-edge technologies in an informal setting. Corporate lighting sponsors to date include Big Apple Lights, High End Systems, KL Productions, Le Maitre Special Effects, MDG, Selecon, Strand Lighting, and Vari-Lite.

All attendees are invited to the 2003 EDDY Awards on Friday, June 27, as PRIMEDIA’s Entertainment Design honors a group of individuals and design teams for excellence in design, and presents outstanding product awards for new products in both the sound and lighting fields. This year the EDDY’s offer a “Salute To The New York Theatre” with winners ranging from set designer John Lee Beatty, projection designer Elaine McCarthy, sound designer Dan Moses Schreier, production electrician Mike LoBue, the design team for Mary Zimmerman’s innovative productions including Metamorphoses recently seen on Broadway, and to Theatre Projects Consultants on their 45th anniversary.

“We are very pleased to be able to present both the BLMC and BSMC in New York this year,” says Jacqueline Tien, publisher of PRIMEDIA’s Entertainment Design and Lighting Dimensions. “We look forward to thought-provoking programs for both the BLMC and BSMC as we continue our long-term commitment to this important professional training initiative.”
