31 Days Of Plots: Illumination At The Morton Arboretum

Live Design's fourth annual 31 Days Of Plots features one production per day during the month of December 2021, highlighting a different lighting design, from across theatre, concert tours, corporate events, live for broadcast, and more, as we wind down 2021 and head toward the new year.

On Day 20 of 31 Days Of Plots 2021, let's take a ride to Lisle, IL, where Lightswitch once again designed the gorgeous lights for Illumination at the Morton Arboretum. Not only do they light the trees for a walking tour of the Arboretum, but also add to the ambiance with a floating, gossamer-like cloud of lit silver mylar activated by the wind, a ‘pixel cloud" creating an array of ever-changing, organic, nature-controlled visuals, and thousands upon thousands of points of laser light enlivened with an ethereal anticipatory soundscape. LEDs, mirror balls, beams shooting into the sky... all the elements of a woodland wonderland of light, almost all LED, that guide guests through the trees.

Principal Lightswitch designer John Featherstone points out: "The power is from permanently installed power services around the site, while load-in takes around two months. The challenge is also the opportunity —creating an immersive, engaging exhibit that welcomes guests of all ages, creed, faiths, and beliefs….we hope we’ve succeeded!"

Illuminatin runs through January 8, 2022.
