31 Days Of Plots: Ellie Goulding

Live Design's fourth annual 31 Days Of Plots features one production per day during the month of December 2021, highlighting a different lighting design, from across theatre, concert tours, corporate events, live for broadcast, and more, as we wind down 2021 and head toward the new year.

Day 29 of 31 Days Of Plots 2021 shines a light on Ellie Goulding's UK tour, which visited clubs and theatres across six cities in early October and was an opportunity for her to play a handful of intimate shows, showcasing the songs from her most personal record to date, "Brightest Blue."

"For this single trailer production design, we carried a compact riser setup, large floor-lighting package, backdrop and small video screen, which we combined with the flown lighting systems in situ in the venues," says LD Cate Carter who designed the tour.

"Ellie wanted to have the opportunity to incorporate a sort of ‘billboard’ into the stage design, upon which she could display messages to raise climate awareness in connection with her work as a UN ambassador for the environment," says Carter. "We wanted to avoid custom fabrication, as an effort to reduce unnecessary waste after the tour had finished (as any custom scenic items would ultimately end up in landfill), so we put together a design using equipment readily available from our rental suppliers and had the backdrop made by Showtex in Belgium, using recycled materials from the drapes used on the previous campaign."

Carter notes: "Ellie wanted a clean and minimal feel onstage, which we achieved by using a white cyclorama uplight with GLP JDC-1s. The cyclorama was framed by a black wool serge border, in order to create a clean and crisp edge and the semi-transparent white fabric, masked the video screen behind.  Under the banner screen, we built a matrix of 36 x GLP Creative Light 1 Plus, which also disappeared behind the white cyc when unlit. For additional lighting effects, we framed the risers with GLP X4-20 bars and Martin Mac Vipers and used Mac Aura XBs for side-light.
