Projection Pros Join BPMC Faculty

Sit up and take notice as featured projection designers Howard Werner and Sven Ortel are joined at the Broadway Projection Master Classes on Monday, May 23, by five projection pros for two in-depth panels exploring the technical challenges, system design, and custom solutions for creating projections on Broadway today. The BPMC takes place at NYU’s Tisch School Of The Arts.

Sven Ortel, whose recent Broadway productions include Wonderland: A New Alice and Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown, will present a solo session about his designs, then be joined by Michael Kohler, programmer for Woman On the Verge and media server tech on Wonderland, plus Chris Kurtz, in-house video tech for Wonderland (and Woman In White a few years ago) for a discussion of the technical challenges and solutions for projections on Broadway today.

Howard Werner, who will first discuss his work on images for Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark*, as well as the current tour of Dreamgirls, will host a panel with members of the Spider-Man team: video programmer Phil Gilbert, production video tech and associate designer Jason Lindahl, and associate designer Sarah Jakubasz. The panel will focus on the technical challenges of creating the images for a mega-musical like Spider-Man.

“We will look at, and discuss, projection and media for the stage in its many forms,” says Werner. “The use of video and projection in other forms such as corporate shows, nightclubs, and various other venues will be touched on as well. Video has become the way we do things now but we will also discuss various forms of projection that I have included in my designs before video was the way of the world.”

Register today to join Ortel, Werner, and their outstanding panel members at the BPMC, and focus on the best of Broadway projection design.

*BPMC attendees are encouraged to purchase a ticket to see Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark with the BLMC on Wednesday evening, May 25.
