Initial Faculty Announced For SDMC

Scenic designers David Korins, Derek McLane, and Michael Yeargan, lighting designer Ken Billington, and associate designer Frank McCullough join designer David Gallo, creative consultant for the event, on the faculty for the first annual Scenic Design Master Classes to be held at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in NYC, October 2 & 3, 2012.

This award-winning faculty, with numerous Tony and Drama Desk Award to their credit, will discuss their recent Broadway projects, from the art and craft to the process and technique of scenic design for the Great White Way. Billington, a Tony Award-winner for his lighting design of Chicago, has collaborated with many outstanding scenic designers over the span of his career and will discuss the all-important aspect of collaboration between scenic and lighting design.

McLane, who won a Tony for 33 Variations, and a Drama Desk Award for Anything Goes, will provide an in-depth analysis of his designs for the current Broadway hit musical, Nice Work If You Can Get It, starring Matthew Broderick, and which all SDMC attendees will see on Tuesday, October 2.

Working with Broadway scenic shops is another subject slated for discussion. “We are extremely pleased to be adding scenic design to our family of Master Classes,” notes David Johnson, publisher of Live Design. “David Gallo is an excellent designer who brings so much to the table, as we saw two years ago at the Broadway Projection Master Classes, and he has lined up an outstanding list of today’s top designers as the faculty for the inaugural SDMC. We encourage all those interested in the art of Broadway scenic design to attend.”
