BSMC Spotlight: Abe Jacob, Creative Consultant

Abe Jacob, creative consultant to the Broadway Sound Master Classes (BSMC), is considered by many to be the “godfather” of contemporary sound design. He will be delivering opening remarks this Saturday, May 17 at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in New York, as well as hosting a Q+A and providing closing remarks on Sunday, May 18.

In a discussion earlier today, Jacob addressed the registered and potential attendees in advance of the classes. “Let me take this opportunity to welcome you, our largest class ever, to the 2008 Broadway Sound Master Classes,” says Jacob. “A theme this year, I believe, could be called ‘collaboration and technique.’ Discussing sound design in collaboration with our guests, director Susan Stroman, musical director Paul Gemignani, and orchestrator Jonathan Tunnick and exploring new techniques to assist the sound design process will make this a very informative and worthwhile class.

“It is also rewarding to note,” he continues, “that this the first year ever for a Tony Award for Sound Design, and one of our faculty, Dan Moses Schreier, has received a nomination for his work on the revival of Gypsy. Congratulations to all the nominees, and I look forward to meeting you all on Saturday morning.”

The Broadway Sound Master Classes will be held May 16 to 18 at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in New York and includes a ticket to attend Young Frankenstein on Broadway on Friday evening, May 16 with sound design by Jonathan Deans.
