BSMC: Tony-winner Leon Rothenberg On Designer/Composer Panel

(Leon Rothenberg won a 2013 Tony for his sound design of The Nance )

Tony Award-winning sound designer/composer Leon Rothenberg is having a busy season, with The Realistic Joneses opening April 6 on Broadway, Violet opening April 20 at The Roundabout, The Most Deserving currently at The Women's Project, and Happiest Song Plays Last at Second Stage. He will take time from this hectic schedule to participate in the 2014 Broadway Sound Master Classes on Friday, June 6 (click here for full schedule), on a panel with fellow designers/composers Mark Bennett and Lindsay Jones, as they discuss how they often wear these two hats on a Broadway show. Rothenberg won his Tony last year for his sound design for The Nance.

“In The Realistic Joneses at the Lyceum Theatre we are using a Yamaha DM2000 as our FOH console,” explains Rothenberg, whose sound system also comprises running Qlab3 through DiGiCo’s UB-Madi interface as playback, with five DPA4021 and three DPA4061 onstage as area mics that are all fed into two DME64n.

“From here we are using a input delay matrix to the PA that includes Meyer UPA-1p, UPA-2p, UPQ-1p, MSW, 650-p, and MM4s in conjunction with d&b E0 and E3,” Rothenberg adds. “It's an interesting show because there is very little music— all of the transitions are done with sound and ambiance. It was interesting to tell these stories between scenes with just crickets, birds, and abstract soundscapes. The show has been a joy to work on with the entire creative and technical team.”
