BSMC Speaker Spotlight: Dan Moses Schreier

Dan Moses Schreier has just opened Arthur Laurents' Broadway production of Gypsy starring Patti Lupone. On May 18 he’ll lead the Broadway Sound Master Class Sound Designers Collaborating With And Working With The Music Director And The Orchestrator in an exceptional inaugural BSMC session. The recent Drama Desk nominee will share his insights on what it’s like collaborating and working with both music director and orchestrator along with special guests acclaimed music director Paul Gemignani and leading Broadway orchestrator Jonathan Tunick.

Gemignani, has worked on more than 40 Broadway shows since the 1970s, including the original versions of Follies, A Little Night Music, Sunday In The Park With George, Zorba, Into The Woods, and the upcoming revival of Pal Joey.

Tunick’s numerous credits over four decades include Into The Woods, A Chorus Line, Follies, Company, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, and Sweeney Todd.

Says Moses Schreier, "The session is a discussion between the sound designer and both the music director and the orchestrator. The success of the sound design for a musical is integrally tied to working with both. Since music is one of the most important parts of a musical, it is important to be responsive to the concerns of the music director, whose job is to realize all aspects of the music—from the vocals of the singers to the musicians playing in the orchestra. Understanding that job completely informs the nature of the sound design for a musical. The orchestrator brings life to the composer's music. It is important for the sound designer to understand what the orchestrator wishes to hear in the arrangements they have created and how they should sound in the theater. It is also important to understand how the MD and orchestrator work together."

Moses Schreier is currently working on the Broadway production of Harvey Fierstein's new musical A Catered Affair in addition to Gypsy. He recently received a Drama Desk nomination for his work on John Doyle's production of Sweeney Todd on Broadway.
