Who's Doing What

Sound designer (and former TCI technical editor) Jim van Bergen and his wife Annette Jolles, a director, have a new family member: Hannah Jane van Bergen, born Sunday, September 20 at New York's Beth Israel Hospital. The proud parents report that she measured 18.5" long and weighed 6lbs, 6oz at birth....Lighting designer Beverly Emmons joins the design team of the Broadway revival of Annie Get Your Gun, starring Bernadette Peters. Emmons joins the already-announced Tony Walton (scenery), William Ivey Long (costumes), and Tom Clark (sound). This revival, with a new book by Peter Stone, has an unusual play-within-a-play concept: the story is now being presented by the cast of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. The show begins with a tent being erected onstage. Graciela Daniele directs and choreographs....Daniele is also signed on to direct the next big musical at Lincoln Center Theatre (after the currently-running Parade). Marie Christine, by Michael John LaChiusa, is based on Medea and set in New Orleans and Chicago in the 1880s. The design team includes Christopher Barrecca (scenery) and Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer (lighting). Other names TBA. The show will probably open at the top of next season.Walt Disney Co. plans to open an ESPN Zone restaurant and entertainment complex in New York City's Times Square sometime this year. The three-story facility, the third of its kind to be built by Disney, will house a Studio Grill resembling an ESPN studio, a Screening Room showing any game on the air, and a Sports Arena, where patrons can compete in interactive attractions.....Lighting designer Willie Williams is out with REM, doing a series of club shows in the US and Europe (one in each major TV market) which are then televised locally. Williams reports: "The gigs are tiny (200-400 people) and we are carrying the entire backline as checked baggage," adding, "I have two suitcases--one for the 'lighting system,' one for the 'stage set'--and we add whatever lekos and PARs we find in the venue. The main body of the rig consists of 2,000 of those flickering flame fake candle bulbs which I string on these kite-like panels; from 84 trucks to two suitcases--what a year I've had!".
