W ith sounds of salsa, merengue, and the macarena floating in the air, ExpoLatina2000 brings together industry professionals from throughout the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, and Central and South America, for an exciting three-day trade show with a distinctly Latin American flavor. This industry forum will be held May 23-25, at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, FL. One of these sessions teams up entertainment architect Gregory Beck (Luxor Hotel, Six Flags, and Sony) and Venezuela-born engineer Max Mariani, a leading expert on display technology for large projection screens, motion simulation, and virtual reality.
Beck and Mariani will lead the second annual design charrette at ExpoLatina, expanded to two days from last year's one-day format. This hands-on course explores the ins and outs of themed attraction design, from how to successfully create an immersive environment with a good script and storyline to complete technical systems and specifications. It is a perfect course for designers and architects alike.
For lighting designers and technicians, ExpoLatina2000 offers a one-day hands-on training session with Martin Professional's latest family of automated luminaires for stage, concerts, and television, paired with Case universal control consoles. This course will be held at Martin's Miami showroom on Tuesday, May 23, with bus transportation available to and from the convention center.
"Beyond the Light" is a three-day track of thought-provoking sessions designed to bring attendees up to date on industry information and issues. It begins with a look at industry-wide standards (including wire rope ladders, aluminum trusses and towers, 0-10V analog control, manual counterweight flying systems, powered flying systems, theatrical fog, flying practices for performers, loudspeaker enclosures for overhead suspension, presentation of photometric data, structural requirements for building, DMX512, and Advanced Control Network) presented by Karl G. Ruling and Hiram Perez on behalf of ESTA (the Entertainment Services and Technology Association).
Additional sessions include a lighting designer roundtable focused on film and television lighting and featuring Miami-based freelance lighting designers Raul Remirez de Estenoz (from Cuba, LD for Spanish telenovelas) and Ruben Solas (from Puerto Rico, LD for Telemundo, Hero Productions, and CBS Tele-Noticias). They reveal their secrets for successful film and television lighting.
A wide range of topics fills out the schedule with highlights such as Sarah Sidman, lighting designer for the Big Apple Circus, theatre, fashion shows, and industrials, who will demonstrate innovations in gobos and dichroic color filters for use with stationary and moving lights in a special two-hour session with technical support by Rosco; and Cathy Steel of Avolites America will moderate an overview of some of the hottest lighting products on the market with panelists Peter Hald of Martin Professional, Sergio Alvarado of Strand Lighting, Tony Magana of High End Systems, and Jose Luis Olvera of Electronic Theatre Controls.
The issue of moving lights for television will be examined in a session moderated by Sergio Alvarado and featuring Patrick Henry, consultant to Televisa Mexico, and Peter Gaspar, the dean of Brazilian lighting designers, responsible for lighting many of TV Globo's most important shows, as well as films, theatrical presentations, music tours, trade shows, and buildings.
A project portfolio by leading lighting designers who work in concert, theatre, and architectural environments will be moderated by Randall Jensen, Stage Equipment and Lighting. Panelists include: Eli Sirlin, architectural specialist, Argentina; Sarah Sidman; Fernando Aguilu, Flashlights, Puerto Rico; Willie Cortes, Switch Lighting Performance, Puerto Rico; and Rui Rita, New York-based theatre designer.
Architect Tom Brighton of BRC Imagination Arts and Max Mariani will present a look at the latest design trends and technology at work in themed environments. This preview of the future will include advanced motion simulators, virtual reality, and other high-tech solutions and innovative systems.
Maurizio Guzman of Strand Lighting and Ron Morissette of Proximo share solutions to the most difficult technical problems in designing lighting systems. They will cover such challenges as the underwater dimming system at the Cirque du Soleil theatre at Bellagio in Las Vegas and other complex projects.
