d&b Rope C Software

Rope C from d&b audiotechnik is a PC-based graphical drag-and-drop user interface enabling total control of d&b systems through a screen-based virtual surface. The newly introduced Version 1 of Rope C allows the D12 and E-PAC amplifiers to be controlled and monitored via their CAN-Bus interfaces. Rope C Version 1 allows systems to be remotely configured and gives central access to the user-definable EQ and delay functions through a graphical interface. Operating elements for all the D12 and E-PAC loudspeaker specific configurations can easily be incorporated into an application from the internal library. ROPE C can interrogate a system of D12s and E-PACs and then create a list of the connected devices. From this list, a user can construct a dedicated application to control and monitor elements of the system as required. Amplifier functions can be grouped, while presets and system configurations can be saved for later retrieval. Applications may also be created and prepared in advance without the system being connected.

Soundcraft GB4 Console

Soundcraft has unveiled the GB4, a dual-mode, four-bus mixing console, which utilizes the GB30 mic preamps and EQ designed by founder Graham Blyth for the company's 30th anniversary. Designed for mid-sized fixed installations, such as clubs, theatres, and houses of worship, as well as regional touring sound systems, the board is available in 12- to 40-mono-channel frame sizes, each with two full-featured stereo channels. The desk sports an eye-catching appearance that is a direct nod to the recent MH4, MH3, and LX7ii consoles, and its dual-mode topology, similarly borrowed from the MH Series desks, allows it to be used on FOH or monitor duties, with fader control of group or auxiliary outputs. Although largely conventional in layout, the GB4 does have some unique mechanical features. The rugged steel chassis has a sloping rear connector panel so that it is easier to configure from the front of the desk, while the integral power supply has a link option for an external back-up PSU. Four mute groups allow several channels to be muted simultaneously, while another unique facility is the limiter on a set of dedicated record outputs making it easier to create a stereo recording of the mix.

Studer Vista 8 Digital Console

Studer has unveiled the Vista 8 digital live production console. Built on the platform of the Vista 6 and 7, the Vista 8 similarly incorporates Studer's Vistonics” user interface, but this time has expanded the concept to provide increased output metering and control. Metering facilities on the newest Vista desk have been extended with 48 assignable meters. Another important facility for theatre operations is the advanced matrix functionality that enables the user to not only assign master channels to the matrix outputs but also assign an input channel directly to a matrix output. The Vista 8's completely redesigned central control bay has 12 motorized faders and a Vistonics TFT screen with 40 rotary controls, which provide directly accessible level controls for up to 52 audio paths, including master, group, or matrix outputs. The new “reverse operation” feature enables the operator to rapidly identify all channels contributing to any master bus and adjust levels instantly. The two faders on the right of the control bay are dedicated as grand masters, and the other 10 faders line up with the 40 rotary controls, as in the channel bays, so that their associated pushbuttons enable SOLO/PFL, MUTE and TALK to each master output.

SoundField Surround Plug-In

SoundField has announced the release of the new Surround Zone plug-in for Digidesign's Pro Tools software on both Mac and PC platforms. The Surround Zone combines the hardware features of both the SP451 surround processor and the MKV System and is designed to accept the B-Format information generated by any of the current Sound-Field microphone models. A full surround recording can be captured using a single SoundField microphone incorporating a patented multi-capsule array. Because the microphone captures the sound at a “single point,” as opposed to multiple spaced microphones, all channels are completely phase coherent. This enables surround mixes to be collapsed back to stereo or mono without the loss of any vital audio information. Each microphone system outputs SoundField B-Format, which is a three-dimensional snapshot of any acoustic event. Once the SoundField B-Format is in the Digidesign environment, the plug-in enables the user to generate various surround mic-arrays with variable polar patterns. Specifically, the Surround Zone provides a choice of three separate 5.1 arrays, individual 6.1 and 7.1 arrays, independently variable width of both the front and rear pairs, phase coherent LFE and individual level controls with mute and solo all with bargraph metering.

Link Locking Rings

Link USA is now offering rubberized locking rings for its LKA, LKH, and LKS connectors. The rubber locking rings have been introduced by Link as a solution to damage that can occur when cables are dropped and dragged around, as is typical in their normal use. The rubber locking rings greatly reduce the chances of physical damage, such as deforming the locking ring when the cable is dropped or banged against a hard surface, while also preserving the appearance of the connector. An added bonus is that the rubber locking rings are much easier to handle, especially in cold weather. Link offers the rubber locking rings for their full line of multi-pin connectors and is currently the only manufacturer of rubber locking rings for the 19-pin lighting connectors. Because of their high production volume, pricing on the full line of rubber locking ring connectors is very close to the metal ones.
