IN MEMORIAM: LESLEY WHEEL

Ms. Lesley Wheel, a pioneer lighting designer and one of the founding members of the IALD, passed away on April 1, 2004.

Lesley Wheel was Bryn Mawr graduate, and her first job was as a lighting designer for supper club performances at the Waldorf Astoria Hilton Hotel. She went on to design lighting for fabulous hotels and resorts all over the world. In the last few years after retirement from the profession, she collaborated on a book with Carol Kinsey and Lauren MacLeod. Her intent was to share the knowledge that she had acquired in the practice for more than 40 years.

Lesley was a mentor and a role model to many of today's practicing professionals in the lighting design industry. She was single-handedly responsible for the success of the IALD internship program. Because of her vision, there is a whole new generation of talented lighting designers in the industry. For her many contributions to the industry, she was made a fellow of both IALD and IESNA and was honored with the IALD Lifetime Achievement Award.

Lesley was not only my mentor but a friend and mentor to many, many others, opening the door to share this great profession.

She will be missed by her personal friends and family as well as the lighting design community.
