Based on the popularity of Live Design's 31 Days Of Plots in December each year, we have decided to present Plot Of The Week, with a light plot (or plots) per week until December 2023, when the next 31 Days Of Plots begins.
Lighting designer and project manager Ebony Madry shares her thoughts, gear list, and lighting plot for an October 2021 production of Spring Awakening at Texas Tech University.
Ebny Madry: The production of Spring Awakening was themed around the concept of a beehive breaking part. What happens when a small group breaks away from the hive mind to create a new way of life? One concept that Jesse Jou, the director on the production, felt was important was that we remember these kids weren’t ‘cool’, but instead, just trying to break away from the society that is oppressing them.
The scenic would support the concept of beehive theme with a large chandelier and floating planes. The audience was in the round, on stage level and a mezzanine level, creating an immersive space. The two levels provided a creative challenge in lighting a musical in the round.
My inspiration was based on creating a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere for the characters to be liberated as they broke into musical moments. Creating a space for their youth to exist inside a world and culture that was oppressing them.
