Light/The Holocaust And Humanity Project At Ballet Austin

Based on the popularity of Live Design's 31 Days Of Plots in December each year, we have decided to present Plot Of The Week, with a light plot (or plots) per week until December 2023, when the next 31 Days Of Plots begins.

Lighting designer Tony Tucci shares the plots for the 85-minute, full-length work, Light/The Holocaust And Humanity Project, as performed by Ballet Austin at The Long Center, Austin, Texas, March 31, 2023- April 2, 2023.

"There are five distinct sections with specific references starting with the biblical story of Adam and Eve as the circle of life begins," Tucci explains. "The first section of the work uses a scenic tree against a black scrim/rear projection screen, multiple layers of projection screens that create an idea of treetops. Video along with conventional templates and color suggest seasonal changes. There is a normalcy to this first section that is interrupted when the harsh light of moving train changes the tone. The projection screens lower to allow for video of multiple doors, where behind, there are people fearing the unknown. The dancers are lit behind multiple layers of images of their homes.  Suggestions of a crammed train box cars and sirens following people on a journey to the unknown. The fourth section titled Ashes suggests the circle of life with a strong central area of light where solos and duet stories happen and others are circling, observing so not strongly illuminated. The idea was to override the natural skin tone to look like white ash for this section.  The final section is a feeling of hopefulness. The scenic rotating sphere with mirrors suggests glimmers of light the allows us to survive through unrelenting hope"
