Live Design's Plot Of The Week focuses on Arvydas Buinauskas of AB Light, who designed and lit a pyramid to add a wow effect to the Justinas Jarutis concert at Vingis Park. Live Design chats with the designer about his work on this event that illuminated a summer night in Lithuania!
Live Design: Overall design intent?
Arvydas Buinauskas: When we started to work together with Justinas Jarutis for this particular concert Justinas had only one wish. He told us "let us make this concert look like it would be my last one ever." And soon after that conversation I had this idea to build a pyramid in front of the amphitheater as a symbol for Justinas Jarutis career legacy.
LD: Interaction with the artist to conceive the design?
AB: We worked very close together from the beginning and till the end of the show. This is not our first encounter. We worked together with Justinas back in the day when he was not that well known in Lithuania. So in a way we grew up together and this concert is like a seal for our friendship and mutual trust.
LD: Use of lighting fixtures, what was used, where and why (angles, movement, etc...)
AB: We put all of our focus on the pyramid. We wanted to use as much of the LED Screens as possible (we had 800 square meters of high resolution LED screens on that pyramid). We even had the ceiling of the amphitheater framed with additional LED lights to emphasize the size of the pyramid which was 26 meters high and had ten thousand layer construction elements that could span into 18 kilometers.
LD: Color palette? It was quite simple if you would compare it to the massive construction that we did. The colors were always arranged together with the video information. One song had a maximum of two different colors.
LD: What made the design a success?
AB: The size of the project. It was made in this way to create a "wow" reaction from the audience. Vingis Park is one of the biggest places in Vilnius to host a show. This summer Imagine Dragons and Rammstein had their concerts here. So if you are planning to organize a concert in Vingis Park, you have to go big. If not then just go home.
