Monday Musings: Live For Broadcast

This week, all eyes are on the broadcast market as the NAB New York Show takes place at the Javits Center. Live Design/LDI has collaborated with NAB to present “The LED Challenge for Film and Television,” with two-time Emmy nominated designer Mike Baldassari on Wednesday, October 16, 4:00-4:30pm.

Baldassari, whose credits range from Netflix specials for John Mulaney and Ray Romano to My Next Guest with David Letterman, discusses the challenges of using LEDs in broadcast environments. As a theatrical lighting designer working in both film and television, Baldassari brings LEDs to the gig, which also brings up some interesting technical issues.

LDI2019 will also focus on broadcast this year, with a special Live For Broadcast Pavilion on the show floor in Las Vegas. Produced in conjunction with lead sponsor, PRG, a series of A-list TV lighting designers will present talks open free to all LDI attendees, curated by Emmy-winning LD Jeff Ravitz. There are also three in-depth LDInnovation Conference sessions on film and television lighting:

These sessions are open to anyone with an LDInnovation Conference Badge or Six Pack of session tickets.

In the meantime, Mike Baldassari will also be a speaker at LDI in a panel with Chris Conti and Jim Lehner of PRG as they take you through the development of FlexiFest, a new scalable production approach for delivering integrated, pre-packaged entertainment systems to venues ranging from nightclubs to theaters to festivals.

PRG and Baldassari joined forces to develop a flexible system of audio, lighting, video, and LED components for Live Nation’s In Residence on Broadway at the Lunt Fontanne. The system was used over a three-month period by artists including Morrissey, Criss Angel, Dave Chappelle, and Regina Specktor. The initial load in was accomplished in two days and the changeover time between artists was less than a day.

The production solution for In Residence has become FlexiFest, a cost-effective, modular, system that can be deployed with minimal on-site labor. It’s engineered to be highly reconfigurable, providing countless creative possibilities.

So whether you are in New York City for NAB or Las Vegas for LDI, Mike Baldassari is a great speaker you don’t want to miss, and LDI’s focus on Live For Broadcast is an exciting new development on the LDI show floor. See you in Vegas!
