For the fifth year, ETC (Booth #3300) is sponsoring a group of talented graduate students to ETS-LDI. The all-expense-paid trip will open further doors for these promising lighting professionals, whose youthful accomplishments and packed portfolios already merit recognition and reward. At ETS-LDI, the students will try out cutting-edge entertainment technologies, rub shoulders with veteran luminaries of our industry, and get a privileged peek behind the scenes with one of the world’s leading lighting companies.
And the winners are…
Arthur “Shon” Causer For Shon Causer, lighting design is a unique opportunity to ‘influence the emotional response of an audience without saying a word.’ A three-time semifinalist in the prestigious ACT Festival, Shon is currently attending Philadelphia’s Temple University and expects to complete his MFA in Lighting Design in 2006. With a BA from Humboldt University in Theatre Arts, 2001, Shon has also been staff electrician at Prince Music Theatre in Philadelphia and served as lighting designer on numerous productions, including Temple’s recent Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery and GrooveLily’s Striking Twelve at Symphony Space in New York City.
Matthew J. Fick Matthew Fick has set his sights on New York, and he “won’t stop running until he reaches Broadway.” He’s off to a good start with a BFA in Theater Arts from Ohio University, Athens, 2002, and experience accrued as lighting designer at Shepherd College in conjunction with Contemporary American Theater Festival in Shepherdstown, WV. Matthew’s recent design work includes Chicago and Footloose at the Papermill Theater and Two Gentlemen of Verona, done while concentrating on a 2005 MFA in Lighting Design at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts, New Brunswick, NJ.
David Stuart Griffie Since being awestruck by the “unbelievable lighting” at a London production of Albert Speer, David Griffie has dreamt of being a professional lighting designer working in Chicago and teaching others. With a recent First Place in Lighting Design from SETC, David is working towards an MFA in Scenography at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, in 2005. In 2002, he received his BS in Theatre Arts from Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC. David has recently done lighting design for the UNC productions of The Crucible, Trestle at Pope Lick Creek and scenic design for the cult hit Bat Boy: The Musical.
Monique R. Norman Monique R. Norman is already a veteran board op, having taught herself how to run a control console when she was in sixth grade, and there was no one to do the lights for a choir show. In June of this year she graduated with a BFA in Lighting Design from Texas State University, where she won numerous lighting honors, advancing to ACTF Nationals at Kennedy Center in 2002. Monique has filled a portfolio with lighting and electrician work, including designs from The Barn Theatre, a summer stock venue in Augusta, MI. She is now pursuing an MFA in Tech-Design at the University of Texas-Austin, anticipating her degree in 2007.
Anjeanette Stokes Traveling abroad, and working under the tutelage of Joanna Town at the Royal Court Theatre in London, has given Anjeanette Stokes a global orientation in lighting design. Her goal is do international work after she finishes her MFA in Lighting Design at Ohio State University, Columbus, in 2005. With a BA in Drama from the University of Dallas in 2002, Anjeanette has amassed a dense resumé, including her teaching assistantship at OSU, her thesis design there on Measure for Measure, and a busy summer internship at Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts.
Greta J. Welsh Since a child, Greta Welsh has been “captivated by shadows”, foregoing the limelight of acting for the moods and colors of light itself. Her fascination has led to experimentation in painting and stage design and aspirations for a career in the industry, working currently toward a graduate degree in lighting design at Humboldt State University, CA, in 2006. Her recent work there includes the atmospheric Echoes of the Night. With a BA from Westminster College in 2001, Greta says she has been much influenced by the likes of Oasis Stage Werks’ Spencer Brown and the lighting seminars of the venerable Bill Klages.
