TUI Cruises’ 2,900-capacity Mein Schiff 1, christened in 2018, offers 12 restaurants and bistros, 15 bars and lounges, and more than 20,000 square meters of outside decks.
The ship’s Theater Schaubühne multifunctional entertainment venue features Fraunhofer IDMT's SpatialSound Wave object-based system for producing and replaying true-to-life three-dimensional, immersive sound. At Theater Schaubühne, the system is used in combination with 40 installed loudspeakers to support a variety of programs with varying sound requirements.
To maximize voice intelligibility, SpatialSound Wave allows optimizing room acoustics by manipulating sound reverberation time; individual protagonists on stage also can be tracked acoustically for localization. “What amazes me most about SpatialSound Wave is that the sound is so realistic,” says Torsten Hirche, technical director and chief sound designer at TUI Cruises. “No matter where you sit in the room, it always feels right in terms of direction and perspective.”
TUI Cruises and Fraunhofer IDMT are currently planning an installation of SpatialSound Wave onboard the Mein Schiff 2.
