Katy Perry’s American Idol performance in 2020 reinvigorated the live entertainment industry during the time of COVID-19 and was a groundbreaking example of xR technology. Creative directors Baz Halpin of Silent House Productions and J.T. Rooney and David Fafard of Silent Partners Studio partnered with XR Studios, who produced the performance, to create a virtual 3D world to match Katy Perry’s vision.

"Extended reality is new for a lot of people. The viewer isn’t expecting it, which helps the surprise factor that makes this digital XR project all the more engaging and enjoyable. It’s creative from the first second, and extremely well-executed in its crafting of a live-action-plus-animation piece on live TV. The artwork/computer graphics and flawless syncing to Katy Perry’s choreography make for an extremely successful performance that’s delightful to watch." — Jeff Ravitz, lighting designer and judge for the Design Achievement Awards
