Focus Lighting Designs Carlton Hotel Lobby

The redesign of the Carlton Hotel lobby in New York City has been the latest collaboration on a hotel project for Focus Lighting, Inc. and The Rockwell Group. The design concept was to use theatrical techniques to enhance the lobby's faded elegance. Multiple layers of light create a theatrical effect with a warm, ambient glow that makes guests feel like they are on center stage at a Broadway show.

The install includes old-fashioned crystal candelabra chandeliers that hang above the main seating area and are wrapped in a metal and sheer-fabric drum, while a linear low-voltage socket strip lies behind orange-glass panels inside the soft suede columns.

Four layers of light illuminate the lobby's feature wall with ETC Source Fours in the ceiling catwalk that frontlight the wall, waterproof uplights and low-voltage strips that frontlight the image, and end-emitting fiber-optics that create an undulating wave pattern on the waterfall. The wall continually switches from a front lit street scene to a fiber-optic water-wall, creating a theatrical show inside the lobby. ETC Source Four theatrical fixtures hidden in ceiling coves downlight the seating area, water-wall, and chandeliers.
