Daniel Connell To Conduct WFX Lighting Session in Orlando

ORLANDO – More churches are reaching a greater level of engagement with worshippers by adding theatrical production elements to services. Although incorporating theatrical design concepts can be a powerful tool for the house of worship, it can also raise more questions than answers. Well-known lighting designer Daniel Connell will offer practical advice on steps a house of worship can take to navigate its way through the common issues surrounding theatrical lighting and set design in a WFX learning session sponsored by CHAUVET Professional.

Aptly titled “Adding Theatrical Effects To Your Services,” the session will take place in the WFX Demo Room 221-B on Wednesday, November 14 from 3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Drawing on his experience as a production designer at Church on the Move, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as well as concerts and events outside the house of worship market, Connell will provide solid, real-world advice on topics like:

  • Preplanning and goal setting for house of worship theatrical designs
  • Cueing lighting in a way that supports content and does not distract
  • Incorporating video panels and atmospheric effects
  • Balancing the need to make theatrical productions look good live and on video

“Worship lighting is always evolving, and theatrical production techniques are becoming increasingly important means of communication,” said Connell. “I want to show people how to use these techniques so they play a supportive role in furthering a message, rather than becoming ends in themselves. You can create a powerful scene without distracting from the main content on stage.”

The 2018 WFX Conference & Expo will mark the third time that Connell has conducted a learning session for CHAUVET Professional. “We have been working with Daniel for a number of years, and we value our relationship a great deal,” said Albert Chauvet, CEO of Chauvet. “Aside from being a very talented designer, Daniel also shares our commitment to promoting education in the house of worship market. As a company, we are proud to support his efforts.”
