In Memoriam: Demfis Fyssicopulos (1972-2014)

It is with sadness that we report the death of designer and programmer Demfis Fyssicopulos, 41, who died Tuesday while surfing near his home in Los Angeles.

Fyssicopulos spent many years as a lighting programmer, working with designers such as Marc Brickman for his design for Black Eyed Peas, before taking on design work for touring concert acts including Prince, Maroon 5, Jon Secada, and even a Pepper's Ghost performance by the late Tupac at Coachella.

"In a profession where we tend to work like dogs and take little time for ourselves, our hobbies, and general mental decompression, Demfis pushed to make time for himself," says designer and friend, Patrick Dierson. "The fruits of this showed in his most recent creative efforts as he engaged in what I have always considered the most important part of the design process: stepping away from it temporarily to refresh your mind. Surfing was arguably his favorite pasttime. One can only wish for the glory of passing while doing something you love."

Fyssicopulos is survived by his daughter, Onna, and his sister, Kati.
