Fountain Of Youth: 2013 Young Designer to Watch, Jeremy Lechterman, Lighting & Production Designer

Residence: Brooklyn, NY

Current project(s): Alt-J Fall North American tour, GroupLove Campus Consciousness Tour (CCT) 2013

Most notable achievements: Bringing my own design for OAR through Red Rocks and Saratoga Performing Arts Center at age 23.

When I started in this industry: Unofficially, age 8, pushing a camera dolly with my father on it for a Ford commercial. Officially, age 15 at the Bardavon Opera House in Poughkeepsie, NY as a stagehand/electrician.

How I got into this industry: My father studied theatre design and cinematography at NYU. I guess I caught the bug early. High school theatre and local work were a foray to design school at Carnegie Mellon University. I started touring immediately after graduating.

Influences: Nature, installation art, photography, evolving technology, my friends, and peers.

Worst advice I’ve ever heard: “It doesn’t really matter, right? The audience will never know.”

Best advice I’ve ever heard: “Everything we put on stage should come from a place of honesty and truth, even if it’s an illusion. It should be grounded in a concrete idea and a belief, not just ‘because we can.’” Also, “Live life to the fullest; it’s the only one you’re going to have.”

My favorite thing about the production industry: We are getting to the point where nothing is out of our reach. If you can dream it up, there is a technical solution out there and a person that can help you achieve it. Whether you have the budget for that is another story.

Favorite design/programming/technical trick: Playing with depth perception and layers on stage, going from a look that appears really two-dimensional and then slowly revealing a great sense of depth and scale, more effective than any atomic blast. Plot and model view in Vectorworks is pretty amazing for vertical positions.

Plans for the future: Move to Boulder, rescue a husky, make lights blink some more.

Other interests/side gigs: Anything that gets me out into nature: mountain biking, hiking, climbing, kayaking, photography.

Awards, honors: Being in this magazine? Kind words from my peers and idols about my work.
