31 Days Of Plots: KROQ Absolut Almost Acoustic Christmas

To celebrate the achievements of 2019 and to welcome all the prospects of 2020, Live Design is conducting 31 Days Of Plots. Every day during the month of December 2019, we will highlight a different lighting design, from across theatre, concert tours, corporate events, and more.

Sightline Design Group partner Seth Robinson created this festival production design for KROQ Absolut Almost Acoustic Christmas on December 7 and 8, 2019 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA. KROQ Absolut Almost Acoustic Christmas is a Southern California tradition, which has featured some of the biggest names in rock. 2019’s lineup was no exception with performances by Mumford & Sons, Twenty One Pilots, The 1975, Beck, Cage the Elephant, Jimmy Eat World, The Raconteurs, Young the Giant, Of Monsters and Men, Angels and Airwaves, The Interrupters, Cold War Kids, lovelytheband, The Head and the Heart, DJ Jeremiah Red, Matt Maeson, and  Catfish and the Bottlemen.

This year’s design featured a 72'' mirror ball and two 23’ high “pixel trees,” which lent to the festive and light-hearted spirit. “Due to a very short turnaround and limited storage space, I needed big elements that could hang and compress into a small area. The pixel trees gave me everything I wanted, and the 14 guest LDs impressed me with the creative ways they made use of them throughout the festival,” says Robinson. He used Vectorworks Marionette to create the pixel trees as parametric objects with settings for the number of strings and bulbs, top and bottom diameters, and overall height, which allowed him to iterate quickly as the design evolved.

SDG partner Stan Crocker joined Robinson on site as well as lighting programmers Bobby Grey and Chris Smith and screens programmer Loren Barton. Lighting was provided by Aspect Lighting, staging by Gallagher Staging, screens and imag by Screenworks, softgoods by Ray’s Rental, and screens control and pixel trees by Fuse Technical Group.
