Set and Lighting Designers Win 2004 Bessies

On Friday evening, September 17, 2004, Dance Theater Workshop, Danspace Project, and The Joyce Theater with the 2004 Bessies Committee, presented the Twentieth Annual New York Dance and Performance Awards (a.k.a. The Bessies) for exceptional achievements of the 2003-2004 season.

This year’s evening of celebration and performance took place at The Joyce Theater. Established in 1983, The Bessies acknowledge outstanding creative work by independent artists in the fields of dance and related performance in New York City. More than 400 artists, producers and press joined in the activities to honor the diversity of ideas that makes New York’s contemporary performing arts community thrive.

Visual Design Awards went to:

  • Brenda Gray for lighting design of Ronald K. Brown's Joyce concert;

  • Christophe Draeger for set design of Miguel Gutierrez's Damnation Road;

  • Kathy Kaufmann for her body of work in lighting design in the 2003-04 season;

  • and set designer Douglas Stein for his body of work with Susan Marshall.
