Hairspray
was the show of the year at last night’s Tony Awards, but La Bohème won in two out of three design categories. The Baz Lurhmann revival of Puccini’s opera won for set designer Catherine Martin and lighting designer Nigel Levings.
The third design winner was William Ivey Long for his costumes for Hairspray.
All three hours of the Tony ceremony were broadcast on CBS, which was an innovation, as in recent years the first hour was run on PBS. During that first hour the design awards were usually given out. Last night, however, the design awards were given before the show began. However, neither Martin nor Levings, both Australians, were in town to pick up their awards.
As always, the Tony Awards choose not to recognize sound design.
