Extron Unveils Interface for Remote Computer Control of A/V Devices

Extron Electronics recently unveiled the IPL T S2, a compact Ethernet-to-serial interface with an integral Web server that enables almost any A/V device to be controlled, monitored, and accessed from any computer connected to a Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), or even the Internet.

The IPL T S2 uses Extron's exclusive IP Link technology, specifically engineered to meet the needs of professional environments. IP Link technology enables serial controlled (RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485) products to be connected to Ethernet-based networks. IP Link technology has already been built into several Extron products, including the Matrix 12800, the ISM Series, and other high performance matrix switchers.

With IP connectivity, the IPL T S2 enables a user to remotely control and proactively monitor and troubleshoot simple or sophisticated A/V systems. The operation of projectors, plasma displays, switchers, and other products can be managed, centralized, and supported by a technician or administrator at any time from any computer with a Web browser. Failure and service messages are also available through an e-mail account accessible via cell phone, PDA, pager, or computer. This facilitates a quick response to correct technical anomalies before a system experiences further problems or downtime.

The IPL T S2 features 1.5 MB of flash memory for storing HTML files, JavaScript, Flash™ animation, and graphics. Customizable Web pages can be created and stored using off-the-shelf software programs, such as Macromedia® Dreamweaver® or Microsoft® FrontPage® to make access and control of connected equipment easy and intuitive. Web pages are served up 50 times faster (6 Mbit/sec transfer rate) than many similar products. With two levels of security, a real-time clock, and the ability to download firmware updates, the IPL T S2 is a secure and versatile solution for a wide variety of applications.

A unique feature of the IPL T S2 is two bi-directional serial ports on 9-pin D-sub and captive screw connectors for RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 compatibility. Both ports can function independently from one another, either as direct and/or pass-through connections within the system. While the IPL T S2 comes with an external international power supply, it can also receive power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3AF). Housed in a small and rugged quarter rack, 1U high enclosure, the IPL T S2 is easy to integrate into existing, as well as, new A/V systems.
