August 2001

SPECIAL FOCUS: CONCERTS
Lighting Dimensions’ first-ever August issue rocks and rolls. Feature coverage will include:

U2
Sharon Stancavage rises to the occasion of the Elevation tour, which has something for every visual taste, courtesy of lighting designer Willie Williams and lighting director Bruce Ramus. From E\T\C Audiovisuel PIGI projectors supplied by Fourth Phase, to Vari*Lite® 2416s™, to a variety of Lowel-Light gear, the show has something for everyone. The production is programmed on a Jands Hog™ 1000 (along with an Avolites Pearl console), makes use of Vario-Lift motors from ChainMaster, and has some custom-made surprises courtesy of Fourth Phase/Light & Sound Design.

Kylie Minogue
After a series of sold-out shows in Europe, Australian pop princess Kylie Minogue (featured in Moulin Rouge) has made a triumphant return to her homeland with her On a Night Like This tour. Catriona Strom goes behind the scenes as lighting designer Vince Foster, called in to redesign the show two days before the European tour was due to start, tossed out the banks of PAR cans and brought in High End Systems Studio Colors®.

Stories from the road
LD Alex Reardon relates his experiences lighting Duran Duran concerts in several Eastern European venues earlier this year. Sidebars include Amy L. Slingerland’s profile on Reardon, and Duran Duran keyboardist, Nick Rhodes, gives a performer’s perspective on dealing with concert tour LDs.

Phish
Donny Emerick talks with LD Chris Kuroda about the unique challenges of lighting a band renowned for its improvisational concert style. Kuroda designs Phish’s rigs with AutoCAD and WYSIWYG, and uses multiple consoles to control the shows, including Altstar LD1500s and an LD500, a Flying Pig Systems Wholehog, and an NSI 120-channel conventional board.

PLUS...

ARCHITECTURE: Northern exposures
Julie Rekai Rickerd examines a number of Canadian projects blending theatrical and architectural lighting, including the Dynamic Earth exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum (suppliers: Dataton, Osram Sylvania, Absolute Action), a Viking exhibition (lit with Fiberstars gear), the Meow nightclub, and St. Giles Presbyterian Church in Ontario, lit with a TIR Systems TLP6 light pipe system.

TV: Farscape
Catriona Strom boldly goes to the set of the Sci-Fi Channel’s most popular show, which is filmed in Sydney, Australia.

FILM: Planet of the Apes
Need beauty lighting for a lady chimp? Leave it to Philippe Rousselot, director of photography on Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes. Rousselot, whose credits include Diva, Hope and Glory, and A River Runs Through It, brings his much-admired burnish to a world populated by Rick Baker’s simian transformations. By John Calhoun.

PRODUCT REVIEW: VectorWorks
Jason Livingston reviews his use of this entertainment and lighting design software, from Nemetschek North America (formerly Diehl Graphsoft) on recent NYC productions.
