30 Under 30: Gabriel Fraboni, Creative Director/Show Director

In celebration of LDI’s 30^th anniversary—1988-2018—Live Design gives a shout out to 30 Under 30: thirty young movers and shakers who are changing paradigms, looking at things from new angles, and rapidly rising to the forefront of their field. From scenic, lighting, projection, and costume designers to technicians and programmers, as well as those who work for manufacturers, production companies, or rental shops, our 30 Under 30 are the harbingers of tomorrow.

With his parents involved in the music industry, Gabriel Fraboni grew up in live entertainment. He officially started in the industry at the young age of 14 as an intern for DJ Bassnectar. Now, he is production designer and show director for Dutch DJ Martin Garrix. Fraboni has been working with Garrix since 2016, when he first co-designed the show with VT Pro Design collaborator Michael Fullman. Together with set designer Romain Pissenem of High Scream, the team designed the now characteristic “plus” look.

When I started in this industry: When I was 14, in 2007

How I got into this industry: Both of my parents were involved in the music industry: my father a music producer and FOH engineer and my mother in record label work. I began working as an intern for music producer/live DJ Bassnectar.

Influences: Andy Watson, Mark Fisher, Robert Woodroffe, Michael Smalley, Greg Ellis

Best advice I’ve ever heard: “Keep your head down. Shut up. Keep working.” - Keith Richards

My favorite thing about the production industry: The feeling of completing a successful show.

Favorite design/programming/technical trick: The magic button within all of my show files. A way to black things out without using the grand master or B/O button.
