Since 1998, German public broadcasting corporation Südwestrundfunk (SWR) has presented promising German and international acts to a wide audience at the SWR New Pop Festival and associated TV show, “SWR New Pop Festival - the Special.” In 2017, full-service event supplier Tour Service Lichtdesign was responsible for the recording of the TV special in the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden and used Elation Professional ACL 360 Bar™ LED moving battens to complement Matthias Rohde’s spectacular stage design.
With more than 30 years behind them, Tour Service Lichtdesign, based in the town of Halle Westfalen, is one of the oldest full-service production companies in the industry. Lighting designer Teddy Goetz, who developed the entire lighting and video design, including the graphic content, specified 96 Elation ACL 360 Bar LED moving batten effects for the 2017 New Pop Festival Special, working with SWR 3 and SWR Fernsehen in collaboration with Bavaria Entertainment.
The ACL 360 Bars are continuously rotating moving light battens with seven 15W RGBW multi-chip LEDs and were positioned on six media towers grouped in a semicircle around a moveable upstage video wall. "The use of the Elation ACL 360 Bars complemented the color scheme of the stage background, in particular the content that ran through the video panels," said designer Teddy Goetz, who has co-written numerous TV shows for SWR as a designer and was awarded the prestigious OPUS prize in 2002. "Thanks to the beam effects of the ACL LEDs, the varying colors and the different intensity animations, the fixtures worked well against the video content. With the different positioning of pan/tilt, new looks were created on stage again and again.
"I think Elation produces reliable products at a good price / performance ratio,” Goetz continues. “The light output of the LEDs in the ACL 306 Bars, the available color options and the response are all very good.”
The New Pop Festival television project was supervised by Nico Müller of Tour Service Lichtdesign. Robin Schütte, also from Tour Service Lichtdesign, created the technical plan. The video team consisted of Robin Schütte, Thomas Passarger, Florian Schlauske and Jan Mathuis. On site lighting technicians were Evelyn Schied, Lars Perbandt and Stefan Wöstmann and assistant lighting operation was by Jens Hillenkötter.
