MOON Shines At Roland Sessions With Chauvet Professional Nexus Panels

LOS ANGELES (For Immediate Release) – The impact that Roland Corporation has had on our listening habits extends beyond its acclaimed digital music products. The company has also furthered the careers of some of the most influential new bands with its popular Roland Sessions. The video recorded live sessions have helped drive emerging stars like Twenty One Pilots and The Neighbourhood to new heights.

History is on the verge of repeating itself with the latest Roland Session, which features the indie rock duo MOON performing “I Got A Fever,” a raw hard-driving love song that is rapidly capturing the attention of critics and fans throughout the US. Doing justice to the group’s big sound and gritty beats is a compact, but hard-punching lighting rig featuring Nexus 4x4 panels from CHAUVET Professional.

Justin Preston of Three-Phase Productions used five of the COB LED panels mounted on stands and the floor to form a semi-circle around band members: singer/drummer Chelsea Davis and guitarist/keyboardist Dan Silver. “MOON is made up of two people, so  I knew I wanted to take advantage of the extra space on stage that I don’t normally get to work with at these sessions,” said the lighting designer, who has worked on multiple Roland Sessions in the past.

Since video recording the artists’ live performances is a critical part of the Roland Sessions, Preston always bases his fixture choices on camera friendliness. “I have used the Nexus panels a number of times before, including on the Roland Session featuring The Neighbourhood, so I know how great the large Nexus pixels look on camera,” he said. “The big panels also broke up the negative space behind the band, which of course was very important for video recording.”

At the same time, however, Preston also wanted to maintain a healthy amount of negative space behind the band to make the small (roughly 1,000 square foot) stage seem larger. Most importantly, though, alternating negative space with the high impact Nexus panels helped him create the kind of starkly powerful look that matched MOON’s sound.

“The key to the Roland Sessions is to provide a different look for each band that comes through the studio space by supplementing the house rig,” he said. “Nexus panels have very good color mixing through the entire range, but for this project we used mostly warm colors, including red, amber and white, to reflect the band’s music in the best visual way.”

So as not to overwhelm the set with his high-output fixtures, Preston ran the Nexus panels at only 10% during the session. “Running any LED-based fixture that low is a concern when applying intensity and color based effects,” he said. “However the Nexus panels performed very well.”

The Nexus panels also helped Preston with the load in. “Power, space, and time are all concerns when working in this studio,” he said. “I usually have four hours to load in and program the show. I try to keep additional lighting down to just one or two 15-amp circuits. The Nexus panels made a visually powerful backdrop that not only fit MOON’s aesthetic, but also fit the scope and scale of the production. That was our goal.”

In the end, Preston met this goal in flying fashion -- giving MOON a look that fit the character of their music and helped brandish their image at a pivotal point in their career.
