Coastlife Church is a growing nondenominational ministry in Venice, Florida, that recently added a new 400-500 seat auditorium to its property and outfitted the space with 33 Elation Colour Pendant™ color-changing LED luminaires. Opened in time for Easter services, the new house lighting system is both white-light functional and creatively full-color immersive when required.
AVL integration company Crown Design Group (crowndesigngroup.org) of southwest Florida was involved with the project from the very start, from initial meetings with builders until the new auditorium opened just before the Easter holiday. “We worked with Coastlife from rendering to reality,” states Garrett Walker, co-founder of Crown Design Group (CDG). “We produced design drawings and worked hand in hand with the builder to see the Church’s vision come to fruition. We oversaw the implementation of all the AVL design, procurement of equipment, and installation.”
Needing a versatile color-changing house lighting solution for the main auditorium and foyer, a flexible unit that could also project shades of white, CDG found it in Elation’s new energy-efficient downlighting Colour Pendant fixture. An excellent color matching unit with a uniform flat-field output, the fixture houses 36 long-life 3W RGBW LEDs for fully blended projections of color or variable shades of white light.
“We chose the Colour Pendants for their versatility in use as both a primary white light for the room, but also for its RGB capabilities,” Garrett says. “The fixture is sleek looking, purpose made for hanging as a pendant light, and individually controlled. It has great coverage with no hot spots.”
The color capability allows the church to complement and color match what is happening on stage whether it’s a church service, musical performance or special event. They hang from an overhead structure at about an 18’ trim height and are spaced about 12’ apart. “Dependability was the most important aspect of the product as it is very difficult to maintain fixtures that are 18’ AFF so they need to work,” Garrett said. “They are very dependable.”
Ideal for noise sensitive environments such as HoW installations thanks to convection cooling and lack of fans, the Colour Pendant also operates flicker free when the church records for broadcast. The units are normally DMX controlled via a lighting desk although separate lighting zones can be controlled via wall-mounted controllers.
Elation dealer Freed Sales played an important role in helping CDG choose the fixtures. “Freed Sales have been great to work with,” Garrett comments. “They have always been able to deliver with tight time margins and are creative and passionate about what they do.” CDG also worked closely with Tom Westberry, who Garrett says was a pleasure to work with.
The Colour Pendants join a stage lighting package that, along with the new building, has helped raise the ministry to all new heights. With the opening of the new auditorium, the campus’ old auditorium will be repurposed as a children’s worship area.
