Brave Berlin And PRG Partner On Large Scale Projection Mapping For BLINK

CINCINNATI -“ Oct. 23, 2017 - BLINK, the largest light, art and projection mapping festival in the United States was held in Cincinnati, Ohio on Oct. 12-15. The event drew more than 1 million people, making it the largest-ever affair in the city known for its cultural and festival events.

The collective projection mapping, urban artscape, street art and interactive art event that was BLINK, was held throughout 20 city blocks. Brave Berlin, a media/event production company and co-producer of the event brought on Production Resource Group (PRG) to provide the technology for projection mapping. Architecturally and historically significant buildings acted as canvases as PRG lit up 22 buildings with projection mapping as well as provided lighting effects on three additional buildings. Key projection mapping locations included

  • The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center
  • The Contemporary Arts Center
  • Cincinnati Memorial Hall
  • The Rookwood Pottery.

Buildings with lighting effects were

  • Potter Stewart U.S. Courthouse
  • The Hamilton County Court House (projection mapping and lighting effects)
  • Covenant First Presbyterian Church.

“As a co-producer of BLINK, Brave Berlin managed the curation of the architectural projection mapping locations and worked with dozens of artists whose work was featured on buildings,” said Dan Reynolds, owner and partner of Brave Berlin. “We chose PRG as our technology partner and were blown away by their expertise and level of service. PRG was the only partner we considered who could even take on a project this big.”

PRG's role was to provide a light canvas on a building on which an artist could create work. To support projection mapping and lighting effects on such a massive scale in an outdoor environment, PRG used up to 10 projectors per building. PRG provided

  • 27 media servers (MBox and D3)
  • 71 projectors ranging in different brightest levels from 4K to 40K
  • 300 + lighting fixtures
  • 10 different lighting consoles to control multiple projection sites throughout 20 city blocks

"It has been a privilege to collaborate with Brave Berlin and the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber to bring this incredible vision to life.  It was truly magical to watch the endless crowds exploring the city, finding creative projections, lighting, and installations around every corner," said Scott Renick, global accounts director of PRG. "PRG is proud to be a member of the team tasked with such an inspiring project. Our production crew worked tirelessly for two weeks, installing and aligning projectors, mapping content and programming lighting and media content. It took a small army of the industry's best lighting and video engineers, weathering rain and long days and overnight programming sessions but the outcome was absolutely astonishing."
