OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN – More than 50,000 people from 60 countries joined together for the largest Adventist Youth Event in the world at International Camporee (CYE). Bandit Lites supplied the lighting for the six-day event which takes place every five years and featured live worship, productions and fellowship.
Working with SBHH Events team of Rachel Quan, Andy Gerber, John Monroe and Brent Walla with along with CYE Producer Betty Whitehead and Director Heidi Litell, Lighting Designer Mark Carver started developing the lighting direction and staging scenic elements of the show nearly two years ago.
“Bandit was great partner for this event,” said Carver. “Over a year and a half of planning went into this, and from the beginning, Mike Golden helped with budgeting and timelines. Project Manager Don Lockridge and Dizzy Gosnell helped prepare and provide a plan of execution, all the while taking into account the factors of an outdoor event.”
“Mark Carver was a huge driving force on this project,” said Bandit Lites Vice President Mike Golden. “We had been in discussion over this job for well over a year and I must say Mark never wavered in his design needs or made any changes of substance during the entire period. It was obvious Mark knew exactly what he needed, and I believe the results speak for themselves.”
With the outdoor elements and tens of thousands in attendance, Carver knew he had to have everything organized and timed precisely. In an added challenge, Programmer André Petrus and model design engineer Mat Geasey were limited to programming the five acts of the biblically based stories in the evening, an effort made easier by pre-visualization on site from Clear All Visuals.
“The show producers and director want the show to be artistic yet still convey proper video technical ratios for a program that is dependent on I-mag to a large local audience and live stream to a worldwide audience,” said Carver.
Bandit Lites supplied more than 300 lighting fixtures for the weekend, including Martin MAC Viper AirFX, Martin MAC Auras, VL 3500 Spots, VL 3500 Washes, GLP X4S, Elation SixPar 100, Elation Paladins, Claypaky B-EYE K20, HES SolaFrame 3000, Chroma Q Color Force 48, Chroma Q Color Force 72 and Bandit’s exclusive GRNLite LED Washes.
The B-EYE K20 provided the general stage wash with its powerful color saturation showing up even in the day light. Martin MAC Viper Air FX’s supplied texture and air effects for toning scenes and contrast while GRNLite Washes and X4S offered set color and contrast.
“I utilized the SolaSpot 3000 for front light augmented by Vl3500 Spots for onstage front light and proscenium scenic wash. I used four Lycian 1295 Followspots for various character pickups,” said Carver. “The new SolaSpot 3000 is a very good fixture; it is bright and has a very nice shutter system especially at the distance of 120 feet at which they were used. The color system and optics are very good as well.”
“For an outdoor show of this magnitude, everything worked per Carver’s plan, and with the production oversight of SBHH and the folks at CYE, the show came together seamlessly,” finished Golden. “We are very honored to work with Mark and all of the folks that produced this event and we look forward to many more to come.”
