Texas Scenic Company Supplies Equipment for UMBC Project

Texas Scenic Company (TSC) has completed installation of stage equipment for the new $165 million performing arts and humanities building at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The university recently held a day-long celebration to mark the opening of the first phase of the building which houses UMBC’s theatre and English departments.

The new facility was designed by architects Grimm & Parker and William Rawn Associates working with Theatre Projects Consultants of Connecticut. TSC was selected to supply the stage equipment.

For the proscenium theatre, TSC manufactured and installed 51 sets of Inline® counterweight rigging, motorized fire curtain, wire tension grid woven in place, a complete package of stage curtains and a chain motor control system in conjunction with Skjonberg Controls Inc. Working with Steeldeck Inc., TSC also installed the sound and orchestra infill platform system.

Work completed in the black box theatre included a long line tension grid woven on site, performance curtains and additional chain motor control systems in conjunction with Skjonberg. Pipe grids and acoustic curtains were also installed in rehearsal studios.

Phase 2 of the project will begin shortly and is expected to open fall 2014. It will feature a concert hall and dance studio for the music and dance departments. Equipment specified includes custom stacking acoustic banners, Inline® motorized hoist rigging, and a custom telescoping choir wagon assembly.
