Tennessee Tech University Invests in Prism Projection's RevEAL Color Wash LEDs

RevEALTennessee Tech University in Cookeville has taken delivery of six RevEAL Color Wash (RevEAL CW) instruments from Prism Projection for its Derryberry Hall Auditorium, an 816-seat theater in the oldest, signature building on campus. The Nashville office of StageLight inked the sale of the professional-grade, environmentally-friendly LED fixtures.

"When I first visited the auditorium they had some 50-year old three-banger PAR strip lights in their front of house position," says Rudi Aldridge of StageLight. "They asked about a new theatrical system but thought it would be prohibitively expensive. Looking at their electrical system, it would have cost them quite a bit in terms of conventional lights.

"But I told them that you don't need to use conventional lights for theater anymore: You can use LEDs. In particular, Prism's RevEAL CW which demonstrates how LEDs have crossed the threshold of usability."

The RevEAL CW offers low power consumption and requires minimal maintenance - important assets for theatrical applications. Their unparalleled color rendering, palette, repeatability and beam quality have been recognized by the Association of British Theatre Technicians, which named it Best New Lighting Product of 2010.

"Prism has really thought about the color temperature mode and how to improve the fixture's video capabilities," Aldridge reports. "The unit takes the wash aspects of an ellipsoidal and applied it to the LED world. The beam is soft but crisp. Even a 26º setting is perfect."

The RevEAL CWs are well suited to the size of the Derryberry Hall Auditorium, too. "They're able to provide even light everywhere, including off the stage," he says. "Their smoothness is awesome."

The auditorium does not have a catwalk and servicing units at FOH "can be a pain," Aldridge notes. "You have to crawl into a ceiling or an attic and pull out the old instrument. But these units won't need servicing for many years. They won't need to be cleaned and with one-sixth the wattage of a conventional fixture, they cut power usage. To say that these are the perfect lighting instruments for the university's needs is spot on!"

He reports that the client is "very psyched" by the RevEAL CWs and is considering additional units. "Many places on campus can benefit from this fixture," Aldridge says. "The goal is for Tennessee Tech University to go all LED, all the time and become a real showcase for Prism LED lighting."
