LEDs Shine New Light on Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer Statue

Dynamic lighting system from Traxon & e:cue and OSRAM adds new brilliance to an iconic monument

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil and EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey – For 80 years, the widely recognizable Christ the Redeemer (‘Monumento Cristo Redentor') statue has overlooked the city of Rio de Janeiro and now, with help from Traxon Technologies & e:cue lighting control [in a partnership with OSRAM], the renowned monument will be seen in a completely new light thanks to an intelligent lighting system consisting of 260 Traxon Wall Washer Shield AC XB RGB and CW, and 40 Liner Shield AC XB-27 RGB fixtures with specially focused optics. Unveiled March 1, 2011, the new lighting system is not only powerful, but exceptionally energy-efficient and cost-effective.

Traxon Technologies supplied the LED fixtures for the installation as well as a signature control system from e:cue lighting control, consisting of a Lighting Control Engine (LCE) and two Butler XTs. When combined, these technologies allow for each fixture in the installation to be individually aimed and adjusted so that the color and light intensity brilliantly illuminates the art deco statue of Christ precisely, further highlighting its intricate details.

Prominent light designer Peter Gaster developed the entire lighting control system in a simple and yet flexible fashion, even allowing for the LEDs to be programmed, activated or deactivated via the Internet, mobile phones or portable tablets. By using LED technology from Traxon Technologies & e:cue lighting control [and OSRAM], the installation is also significantly more energy-efficient than the previous lighting system. "The former lighting system was cost-intensive and required a great deal of work. With the new, power-saving LED technology, it will finally be possible to adapt the light simply and quickly to the surroundings. The famous statue of Christ will surely inspire even more awe and wonder in visitors from around the world," explained Gasper.

The new lighting system was officially opened in the presidential palest on March 1. Residing politicians and members of the church expressed their enthusiasm for the advanced, energy-efficient lighting, which will lend a modern glow to the classic landmark. Pope Benedikt XVI, who sent a letter to the opening, is also delighted with the monument's newfound radiance.

“‘Monumento Cristo Redentor' is one of the most recognizable emblems of Brazil, and to be a part of creating the system illuminating the statue is truly an honor,” said Daniel Tatini, Regional Manager, Traxon Technologies. The new lighting installation will be managed by OSRAM who is responsible for replacing the old lighting system as well as maintaining the new installation for two years with support from the city and the archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro.
