Lighting designer for Fela! Robert Wierzel addresses the group from the stage post-show Tuesday night.

The Broadway Lighting Master Classes saw Fela! last night and sat in for a post-show Q+A with lighting designer Robert Wierzel. The musical follows the story of musician and political activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and it is set in The Shrine musical venue in Lagos, Nigeria in the 1960s.

Nigerian BLMC attendee Teju Kareem, coincidentally enough, was actually a lighting designer at The Shrine before it was burned to the ground by the police in the late 1970s. He said that the show really got everything right, and he was clearly moved when he told the group about his history related to the musical.
