London-based lighting and visuals rental company Colour Sound Experiment (CSE) supplied lighting and power distribution for the pop-up gallery, cinema and dining lounge showcasing the winners of the British Airways Great Britons Programme.

The installation includes BA Flight 2012 - a dining suite modelled on a luxury aircraft interior with bespoke dining served up by Simon Hulstone under the wing of Heston Blumenthal.

Kicked off with a media launch followed by two weeks of public open days, the installation is located in the former Nicholls & Clarke builders merchants building at 3-10 Shoreditch High Street, London.

The new aircraft livery has been applied to nine of BA's A319 aircraft as part of the national carrier's London 2012 celebrations.

Colour Sound was contracted by PR and events agency Cake. The brief from Cake's Production Director Troy Morgan to Colour Sound's project manager Fletch was to light the various areas bringing a slick, clean look.

The different areas are lit with a wide variety of light sources.

In the gallery and bar area, 50 chrome stem-lights are used to highlight the artwork illustrating the livery design process that Great Briton's winning Artist and Designer Pascal Anson developed while mentored by Tracey Emin.

A truss structure has been installed to fly a 1.5m long model of the Airbus, which is lit with Par 16 (Birdies). In the bar, chrome PARs are used to light the room, together with Source Four profiles with gobos projecting BA gobos on the floor. These are all set to about 75% intensity and run directly from the dimmers.

In the corridors, more stem lights are used for picture lighting – Colour Sound has a large stock of these which are used extensively on corporate shows where they provide an elegant contemporary look.

In the cinema is a screening of Prasanna Puwanarajah's short film Boy, produced with Richard E Grant. CSE installed 20 i-Pix Satellite LED bricks as uplighters that are controlled via ArtNet to synchronise them with the time-coded screen content that runs on a loop.

In the press areas, a series of red-heads have been deployed by CSE, beam-clamped in the roof and used for lighting the step and repeat boards. In one area a large soft box has been created above the space in conjunction with the set builders.

Colour Sound has also supplied and installed lit emergency exit signs.

Twelve points of power distribution are being used to feed cabling throughout the site facilitating sound, lighting, AV, and heating in the catering, dining lounge and gallery bar areas.

Fletch comments, “It has been a high profile job with lots of attention to detail needed and a huge emphasis on aesthetics and blending in with décor in the different areas. It has been good working with Cake, and naturally, also to be involved in such a significant event in the run up to London 2012”.
