Joseph Cornell made boxes. This idiosyncratic visual artist (1903-1972) assembled boxed collages of maps, photographs, and an assortment of everyday objects found in nature as well as thrift stores and bookstores in his native New York City. He placed his assemblages in frames behind glass.
