Scenic Design Master Classes In New York: Day One

The Scenic Design Master Classes, led by creative consultant David Gallo and supported by platinum sponsor Rose Brand, as well as Hudson Scenic, iWeiss, and PRG, kicked off today in New York at Baryshnikov Arts Center.

Gallo addressed the practical side of scenic design, including booking the job, how the studio works, interactions with shops, general managers, producers, props, and more. "I don't build as many finished models as I used to; we do so much more in 3D on the computer now," said Gallo in his session, Nuts and Bolts of Broadway. "We live in a world where people are scattered all over the globe and information needs to flow freely...We primarily use AutoCad, After Effects, and 3D Studio Max to create active 3D models."

David Korins, who presented "Foundation to Finish," discussed what makes each Broadway show a unique experience from inspiration to logistics through tech and previews. "We create the world on stage; the lighting designer reveals it," Korins said in his session.

In the afternoon, Christine Jones presented, "The Empty Space: Let's Fall In Love," discussing how to face the terror of an empty black box, as well as a look at her design process.

Lighting designer Ken Billington joined the faculty of scenic designers to discuss collaboration between the two disciplines in the tight quarters of a Broadway house in his session, "Shedding Light On Broadway."
