Book Release: Theaters 2: Partnerships in Facility Use, Operations and Management

Theaters 2: Partnerships in Facility Use, Operations and Management by Holzman Moss Architecture, JaffeHolden, and Theatre Projects Consultants, published by Images Publishing, is schedule for publication next month. The book addresses many determining factors behind today's most successful, jointly used and funded arts venues.

Opera singer Plácido Domingo, conductor Richard Buckley, Jack Finlaw, director of the City and County of Denver's Division of Theatres, and Ron Gibson, founding director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, are among the eminent theatre directors, playwrights, educators, producers, performers, and patrons who have contributed to Theaters 2, providing a comprehensive overview and a critical insight into the variety of ways of reinterpreting, reexamining, and advancing the presentation environment for diverse audience and performance needs. Chapters in the form of case studies detail the levels of partnerships and collaborations required to create distinctive architecture in today's economy, beginning with defining common goals among various user groups to reconciling budgets and program activities, and culminating with the delivery of multipurpose buildings.

“Theatre design in this new era of private-public partnerships is becoming more of an extension of the performance space,” says Malcolm Holzman, FAIA, founding partner at Holzman Moss Architecture and coauthor. “Audiences are experiencing a shifting of the presentation environment toward greater engagement and interaction in which the spoken, written, and electronic word are programmatically interwoven under one roof.”

An inspirational guidebook to building the modern theatre, concert hall, and cultural center in partnership with the community, projects featured in the book range from ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center in Charlotte, North Carolina to Oslo Opera House, in Oslo, Norway.

“All arts buildings begin with a vision and a partnership. The vision of what the arts mean to the community, and a partnership between artists, civic leaders, administrators, the design team, and ultimately all of the trades people who will build the facility. From these partnerships, cities are regenerated and enlightened with the arts,” says coauthor Benton Delinger, principal of Theatre Projects Consultants.

Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, New York City; the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre and the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center and the Center for the Arts, Dallas, Texas; and the Las Cruces Performing Arts Center at New Mexico State University are included among the dozens of projects funded by public and private partnerships found throughout the country and the world. Project summaries at the end of the book include brief descriptions of facilities, locations, and the participating design teams.

For Mark Holden, FASA, principal of JaffeHolden and coauthor of Theaters 2, “the best buildings result from being ready financially, all players being involved early in the process, and establishing open and trusting partnerships. This is the key to a successful building that delivers architectural and acoustic results beyond the expectations of community constituents, the patrons, artists, and managers.”
