April, 22 2013: German industrial metal band Rammstein opened their European tour last week in Spain, with a dramatic multi-faceted custom scenic cross pod, manufactured by TAIT. Working closely with Set Designer LeRoy Bennett and Production Manager Nicolai Sabottka and Rammstein band members, TAIT worked across both their US and European offices to produce the immense scenic pieces.
TAIT created two cross pods, to leapfrog each other during the tour, which includes both stadium and festival dates. The large scenic full-aluminum structures hang above the band from four variable speed chain motors and are integrated with programmable LED (Chromlech’s Elidy), Martin Mac 101 moving lights and custom pyrotechnics from FFT-FX.
The pods can move up to 10 metres vertically, and rotate 180 degrees horizontally. There are four wings that open and close via four sets of paired linear actuators, giving a total span of 6 metres when fully deployed, forming the recognizable Rammstein cross logo. The pod’s four wings can open and close independently of each other to create a range of scenic forms during the show. All movement is controlled by TAIT/FTSI’s Navigator automation software.
As well as being weather resilient for outdoor shows, all lighting, LED and pyro features are pre-mounted to the pod to save time during load in, and work within time constraints of the band’s festival shows. The pod concept and functionality was developed in TAIT’s US office and then designed and manufactured in TAIT’s Belgium facility to accommodate the band’s European-based production company.
The custom pieces were designed and manufactured within two months of confirmation.
