After creating a sensation in Asia’s two largest metropolises, Tokyo and Shanghai, the exhibition Waist Down—Skirts by Miuccia Prada is coming to New York. The collection of skirts designed by Miuccia Prada, which range from the first women’s collection in 1988 to today’s latest pieces, will be shown at Prada’s NYC Epicenter in Soho (575 Broadway) from April 19–May 31.
AMO, the think tank of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), has designed a unique installation for the exhibit. AMO has worked with Prada previously, on the company's information technology, its Web site, and the media content of Prada's stores.
The New York Epicenter exhibition occupies the entire stretch of space between Broadway and Mercer Street. The exhibit uses all of the stores’ architectonic features, including the iconic “wave,” the “hanging-city” cages, the foldable “stage,” and the versatile steps.
As a vehicle of movement, the skirt has been a stage for a number of inventions. Yet, due perhaps to the skirt’s familiarity, such inventions have been overlooked. Waist Down illustrates the joy of wearing and viewing skirts in motion. The exhibition gives a full-fledged view of a hundred skirts from the vast archive of Prada’s women’s collections.
