Stufish Creates Largest UK Stage For Coronation Concert

The largest stage ever built in the United Kingdom was unveiled on Sunday night for the Coronation Concert. The event hosted international music stars, including Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, but the stage was also required to be large enough for a 70-piece orchestra and various members of the armed services.

The stage was created by legendary live event architects Stufish and built over two weeks on to the steps at the East Terrace of Windsor Castle.

  • Stage area: 10,300 square feet
  • Stage height: 82 feet
  • Miles of cable: 21
  • No of light fixtures: 800 lights (85% are LED fixtures)
  • Stage wings 2 x 98 feet
  • Catwalks: 2 x 43 feet
  • Projections on the castle walls: 114 feet wide x 98 feet high
  • Video screen: 170 feet wide, 15 million pixels, and carried images of the live event and also pre-recorded video messages from poets, actors, and television personalities.

The design encompasses diagonal catwalks which reference the diagonals of the St Andrew's cross in Britain's Union Jack, and the curved video screen floats above the stage evoking a crown, and the coronation itself.

Claire Popplewell, creative director of BBC Studios which produced the event, joked, “We hope His Majesty likes it. It’s in his back garden!”
