The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) has bestowed its highest honor, the Award of Excellence, on Jonathan Speirs, Gavin Fraser, and Carrie Donahue Bremner, all of the Edinburgh, Scotland firm Jonathan Speirs and Associates Ltd., for their work on the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, UK. The Award of Excellence, one of 14 honors announced yesterday at the IALD's 19th Annual International Design Awards in San Francisco, goes to the project achieving the most successful integration of lighting and architecture.
Five Awards of Merit were also given. The honorees were William Schwinghammer of Johnson Schwinghammer Lighting Design Consultants, Inc., for New York's Qiora Store and Spa; Paul Gregory, J. R. Krauza, Jaie Bosse, and Derek Wadlington, for the Morimoto Restaurant in Philadelphia; William Schwinghammer again, along with Michelle Clement, for the MoMA Design Store in New York's SoHo neighborhood; James Carpenter of James Carpenter Design Associates, Inc., and Matthew Tanteri, of Tanteri Associates, Inc., for The Luminous Arc at the San Diego Convention Center; and Randy Burkett, FIALD, Burkett Lighting Design, Inc., Susan Jennings, and Ronald Kurtz, IALD, for the new lighting design on the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Gateway Arch in St. Louis, MO.
A special citation for historical preservation was given to Susan Brady, IALD, Attila Uysal, and Kim Loren, all of Susan Brady Lighting Design, Inc., for their work on the Frist Center of the Visual Arts in Nashville, TN. A special citation for integration into an urban environment went to Severin Boser, Christoph Kellenberger, Lukas Bosshard, and Andreas Derrer, of oos Ltd. in Zurich, Switzerland, for design of the firm's Glowing Walls.
Six projects also received honorable mentions from the judges. They are the AIST Tokyo Waterfront project; Aqua Hall in Osaka, Japan; Mickey and Friends Parking Structure at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA; Sendai Mediatheque in Miyagi, Japan; Suba, New York, NY; and Washington, DC's Thomas Jefferson Memorial.
