Jean-Guy Lecat Presents Workshop at La MaMa

French scenic designer and theatre consultant, Jean-Guy Lecat returns to New York City to present a four-part workshop: Theatrical Space and the Work of Peter Brook on April 26, April 27, May 3, May 4, 2003, from 10am to 2pm each day. The workshop will be held at La MaMa, 74A East 4th Street in Manhattan.

For 25 years, Jean-Guy Lecat has created and transformed spaces for Sir Peter Brook all over the world. Now, in a rare New York appearance, Lecat will share his immense knowledge of theatrical space, design and acoustics with artists.

"Directors, designers, acousticians, producers, architects, and actors will have an opportunity to learn from this internationally renowned master," says David Diamond, workshop coordinator. Lecat will take participants through theatres he designed in New York: BAM's Harvey Theatre, LaMaMa Annex, and others as he discusses the use of space, the history of the theatre, the acoustics, the relationship of actor to audience.

Lecat will challenge traditional ideas about space for theatrical performance. He will describe how he transformed spaces as diverse as a railroad station and a quarry into viable performance spaces for Peter Brook. He will present the history of Peter Brook's work through his ideas about the unique spaces in which they were performed.

The workshop schedule includes:
DAY 1: Downtown Performance Spaces: Acoustics and Design Considerations. Includes tours of LaMaMa E.T.C. theatres and other theatre spaces

DAY 2: Traditional vs. Unique Spaces: Using Space to Tell the Story. Seminar/Discussion

DAY 3: BAM's Harvey Theatre as a Home for the Work of Peter Brook: Includes tour of Brooklyn Academy of Music Harvey Theatre and BAM Opera House
